We’re back in Dowon with Martin and Kaitlyn…

Kaitlyn is on her way home from her first day at Adam Entertainment. It was an interesting day, but she admits it was also a little boring.

Martin: So, how was your first day on the job?
Kaitlyn: Uh, not bad.
Martin: You don’t sound very enthusiastic.
Kaitlyn: I am, it’s just…

Martin: Wasn’t it what you expected?
Kaitlyn: It was, but there are a lot of rookies, yelling into the mics all day. They get on my nerves.
Martin: Whoa, well, give them a break. You said it, they’re rookies.
Kaitlyn: Yeah, I’m a rookie too, and I don’t go around annoying other people with my off-key voice.
Martin: Ouch.

Kaitlyn: Sorry, I don’t mean to sound arrogant, but I thought I’d be performing alongside pro singers at concerts with big crowds in the audience.
Martin: Kait, don’t you think you’re getting ahead of yourself? You’re a great singer with a beautiful voice, but these things take time.
Kaitlyn: You’re right. Still, I can’t help but feel a little, you know, bored?

Kaitlyn: Do you think we could go out somewhere later? I need to clear my head.
Martin: Yeah, me too.
Kaitlyn: Was your first day at college not what you expected either?
Martin: No, it was exactly what I expected: just another ordinary day at school, nothing different from Bliss Bay.
Kaitlyn: (Sighs) Well, looks like we’ll have to look for excitement somewhere else.

That “somewhere else” for Martin and Kaitlyn was the park, where, luckily for them, though there wasn’t much “excitement,” everything felt peaceful, so they were able to relax.

Kaitlyn: How’s my massage, huh?
Martin: Wonderful as always. You haven’t lost your touch.
Kaitlyn: Yeah, a little cold won’t stop me.
Martin: Luckily it’s not that cold today.

Martin: Ah, seriously, you give the best massages.
Kaitlyn: Among other things, yeah.
Martin: Kait… I’m trying to relax here, okay?
Kaitlyn: (Giggles) You’re right, sorry.

Kaitlyn: But you’re not tense just because school is the same as it is in Bliss Bay, are you? There’s something else.
Martin: Yeah, that’s true.
Kaitlyn: Okay, tell me. What is it, Mart?
Martin: It’s everything.
Kaitlyn: “Everything” is too vague. You’ll have to be more specific.

Martin: Okay, let’s start with the money. I mean, how are we going to pay for rent, utilities, tuition, food, and everything else? Sorry, but I don’t think your salary will cover all that. Nor will my books or my paintings, some of which have been total flops.
Kaitlyn: Hmm. Maybe you could take on some freelance work, or a part-time job? That way we’d have more money, and you’d still have some time left to paint and write.
Martin: What about college and homework?
Kaitlyn: True, I hadn’t thought of that.

Martin: See? And it’s not just the money; it’s just that… I miss being a cop. Then I felt energized, fulfilled, happy to do something for my city, you know?
Kaitlyn: I get it. So, why don’t you try working as a firefighter? It would be just as exciting, and you’d be doing something for your city, too.
Martin: A firefighter? That sounds dangerous.
Kaitlyn: As if being a cop wasn’t.
Martin: Yeah, well…

Kaitlyn: I mean, you could apply and give it a try. If you don’t like it, you just quit and look for something else.
Martin: Okay, I’ll give it a thought.
Kaitlyn: Good. Now, enough talking. It’s a beautiful night, how about we go for a walk?
Martin: Yeah, sure, why not?

A FEW MINUTES LATER…

Martin: Kait, you know, there’s something else that’s been worrying me.
Kaitlyn: Besides money and work? What is it?
Martin: Us.
Kaitlyn: Us? What’s wrong with us?

Martin: Nothing, and that’s exactly the point. I mean, we like each other, we get along well, and we’ve been living together for a while now. Don’t you think it’s time to take things to the, um, next level?
Kaitlyn: The ‘next level’ being…
Martin: I’m not talking about marriage or anything like that, just a slight change in the rules, so we can be more like, you know…
Kaitlyn: Exclusive?

Martin: You don’t like the idea?
Kaitlyn: Well, I don’t dislike it, but… I don’t know if we’re ready. Maybe we should wait a little longer.
Martin: How longer?
Kaitlyn: I don’t know, Mart. I’m not sure if I can commit to someone right now. I wouldn’t want to let you down or hurt you.

Kaitlyn: But I don’t want to hold you back either. If you ever meet a girl who makes you happy, I won’t get in the way.
Martin: I don’t think you’re getting me. I don’t want another girl, Kaity, I want you.
Kaitlyn: And you have me. But I was clear from the start. I set my rules, yet nothing forces you to follow them.
Their complex conversation ends up sparking a controversy that sends Martin and Kaitlyn back to the bench…

Martin: What’s wrong with being exclusive? I mean, we have what we need in each other. Why would we need anyone else?
Kaitlyn: That’s the whole point of dating other people, we need to make sure.
Martin: Of what? I love you, Kait, that much I’m sure of. Do you love me, though?

Kaitlyn: That’s an unfair question, Marty.
Martin: Why? It’s a simple question.
Kaitlyn: Because you already know the answer.
Martin: Do I?

Kaitlyn: Yeah. I might never say it out loud but doesn’t mean I don’t feel it
Martin: So? What’s stopping us from taking the next step and become a couple?
Kaitlyn: We are a couple, Marty. But one without conventions, without ties, one that can be happy in an honest, loving, but open relationship. Or are you unhappy?
Martin: That’s also an unfair question.

Kaitlyn: Still, you should answer it, cause I need to know.
Martin: Of course I’m not unhappy; in fact, I’m incredibly happy with you.
Kaitlyn: But?
Martin: …
Kaitlyn: Don’t say it, you want me to be all yours. Well, here’s an important piece of information: I’ve gone out with other guys, but you’re the only one I sleep with. Happy now?
Martin: Not entirely.

Kaitlyn: Why not? Explain it to me, cause I don’t get it.
Martin: It’s the set the mood. You don’t look satisfied.
Kaitlyn: That, uh…
Martin: See? You are not.
Kaitlyn: Well, I admit I’m a perfectionist and I’m a little picky…
Martin: A little bit too much, yeah.
Kaitlyn: Yeah, so what? You make my heart flutter when we’re together, cause I love you, Marty.
Martin: Wait. Did you say you love me?
Kaitlyn: (Flushed) I don’t like saying it, but it just slipped out. I hope you don’t think I’m pretending now.

Well, it looks like this controversy ended on a positive note. 😉

Martin: That’s the sweetest thing I’ve ever heard you say to me. And no, I don’t think you’re pretending.
Kaitlyn: Good, because it’s the truth.

Kaitlyn: Just give me some time; the set the mood will fix itself, you’ll see.
Martin: Don’t get me wrong, I love our set the mood, but it’s crucial to me that you’re happy with it too.
Kaitlyn: I’m happy as long as we, you know, stick to my rules?
Martin: We will, don’t worry.

Martin: We’ll do whatever you want, whatever you say.
Kaitlyn: Are you completely sure?
Martin: More than ever.

Kaitlyn: Aw, I love you, Marty… Oops, I said it again.
Martin: And I love hearing it.

Kaitlyn: Are you sure I’m not stepping on your wishes or rights in some way?
Martin: In no way, shape, or form.
Kaitlyn: I hope so, cause I wouldn’t want to be unfair or oppressive with you.
Martin: Not at all.

Kaitlyn: I’m so happy to hear that.
Martin: And I’m happy that you’re happy.
Kaitlyn: But are you happy, happy, not just happy that I’m happy?
Martin: Yes. I’m happy, happy. I’m the happiest man in the world.
Kaitlyn: Okay. So, can we go home now? It’s getting cold here.
Martin: Sure.

Martin and Kaitlyn set off for home. She looks happy and calm. Him? Not so much.
Martin: Is Kait really happy? And is this really what he wants? To share her with other guys, to have her without really having her, even though he knows now that she loves him?

Martin’s silence on the way home raises alarm bells for Kaitlyn. Is he really happy or is he the one pretending he’s willing to obey her rules and do whatever she wants? Also, did he believe her when she said he loved him? And this set the mood thing… Could it turn into a problem? Nah, that will surely sort itself out overtime. Or will it?
