Around 3 AM, still at the Crane household…

“Now I get it, that’s why you’ve been so distant. God, I’m a fool for not seeing it…” Ann said, still not recovered from her shock.
“Believe me, I’m sorry, I never meant to hurt you.” Robin went on.

“I really wanted to make you happy, to be a good husband and a good father to our daughters.”
“Well, you didn’t do a very good job, did you?”
“I know, and I apologize for that too.”

“Is that all you can come up with? Apologies? I sacrificed everything for you, Robin. I postponed my career, my plans, my dreams, to start a family with you! And this is how you pay me, lying and hiding things from me?”
“Ann, I’m truly sorry, I -“

“Stop saying you’re sorry! That is of no help at this point!” Ann exploded.

“And don’t think for a second that I will tolerate this. I won’t be living under the same roof as you while you keep seeing that woman!”
“Why, I would never ask you to do such a thing”, Robin quickly reacted.

“Really? Well, you can’t have both of us, so I’m afraid you’ll have to choose between me and her”.
“I know. That’s – that’s another thing I wanted to talk to you about”.

“Oh, so there’s more? Haven’t you hurt me enough already?”, Ann asked in a cracked voice, turning her back to hide a tear. Robin gasped; this was exactly the reason he had delayed the moment to tell her the truth. He didn’t want to hurt her, see her suffer, but he had already started, so he had to go on, get this over with.

“So? What is it now? Go ahead, I’m waiting.” Ann pressed turning to him again. There was no point in saying sorry anymore, Ann didn’t want more apologies, and she was right, they were useless at this level, so he took a deep breath and continued.

“Okay, this isn’t easy for me to say, but – I already made my choice.”

“And you chose her, is that it?” Ann asked after another brief moment of shock.
“Yes. Forgive me, it wasn’t my intention to play you, nor do I want to hurt you any worse, so I think it will be best if… we part ways”, Robin ended in a whisper.
