Time Traveler: Episode 231. Worst Case Scenario – Part 1

“The heating is on; you can take off your jacket if you’d like.” Ann said, as they walked through the foyer to a small living room.
“I’m fine, thank you,” Dustin replied, examining the house. It was quite cozy in there, but he kept getting those shivers running down his spine.

“So? What happened to Robin?” he asked, containing his dread. Ann took a few seconds to collect herself and after a couple more sobs, she turned to him with tear-filled eyes.

“What I’m about to tell you may sound insane, but it is what happened, I saw it with my own eyes,” she replied.
Dustin felt his knees weaken.

“Please Ann, I beg you to speak at once, you’re scaring me,” he demanded.
“Okay.” Ann wiped away her tears and took a deep breath.

“Shortly after Robby went out of the house, I heard screams in the garden; I ran to the studio window to look out, and… then I saw it.”
“You saw what?”
“A huge alien ship, with bright colored lights; it was there suspended in the air, spinning really fast and making strange noises. I had never seen a thing like that.”

“It emitted a bright beam, like a pillar of light. The beam lifted Robin into the air and the ship sucked him in through a hatch at its bottom, then it flew to the other side of the street, taking Robby away.” Ann explained in tears. Dustin shuddered. He had to clear his throat before speaking again.

“A-are you absolutely sure it was an alien ship? Couldn’t it have been some of those high-tech devices Rob uses for transportation?”
“No. I know those devices well; when Robby used them, he seemed comfortable and safe, but… By the way he screamed and fought for his life, this was definitely not one of those.” Ann replied.

It took Dustin a few seconds to calm his racing heartbeat and be able to speak again.
“So… what you’re telling me here is that Rob was abducted by aliens?”
“I- I think he was, yes. “
“There’s no way”.

“I know it sounds insane, but that’s what happened, I saw it with my own eyes!” Ann sobbed. “Robby screamed at me for help, but – for some reason I just couldn’t move; it was as if an invisible force was holding me in place.

“All I could do was watch as the ship took him away,” she added through her tears. “When I was finally able to move, it was already too late, Robby was gone.”

“This was my fault”, she continued desolately. “He begged me to let him stay here until tomorrow, but I refused and forced him to leave. If I hadn’t kicked him out, he would be home now, safe and sound.”

“It’s all my fault! I did this to him!” She added bursting into tears. Dustin froze. What should he do now? Should he comfort her? Lend her his shoulder to cry on? How, if he himself could barely cope with his own panic? Plus, it was kind of true, if only Robin would have been able to spend the night inside, none of this would have happened to him.

He could feel his fear slowly spiraling out of control.
“This can’t be happening; it’s got to be a bad dream,” he thought to himself.
But it wasn’t a dream; this was happening, and the realization of it only added to his terror.
“I never meant for this to happen to him, I swear, please believe me”, Ann cried; Dustin swallowed heavily.

He knew for a fact that an alien ship had hovered around Aurora Skies because he had seen it himself. Also, “the other side of the street” was where Jul’s house was, and she had seen that spacecraft too. All three of them had seen the same, so Ann’s story had to be true.

Not knowing what else to do, Dustin summoned what little courage he had left.
“Of course I believe you”, he replied after a sigh. “Unfortunately, what you just told me sounds consistent with an abduction, at least as described by all those urban legends”.

“Everything seems to indicate that Robin has indeed been abducted by aliens“, he concluded, as he trembled at the mere mental image of Robin screaming for help, desperately fighting for his life while being absorbed by a powerful alien beam. What had happened to him was the worst-case scenario; the ultimate nightmare of any Aurora Skies resident come true.
